Inspiring children to do their bit for the environment
The npower Climate Cops programme helps schools across the UK to become greener and more sustainable and shows young people how they can take a lead in being greener at home and school through interactive and engaging activity events, websites and free teaching resources. It follows the Government’s National Framework for Sustainable schools by focusing on the Child, Curriculum, Campus and Community.
Our programme empowers young people to share their green knowledge and ideas with family, friends and their wider community. Our employees also participate in our npower Climate Cops programme as volunteers, developing and share their knowledge and skills with young people.

At selected schools, children aged 9-11 years old take part in an engaging npower Climate Cops Academy event – a highly interactive fun day about climate change and how we can all save energy and the planet.
View our film to see what the children get up to.
School Energy Audits
Selected schools receive a free energy audit, carried out by independent auditors who provide energy saving recommendations and advise on how the schools can lower their energy usage/cost and carbon emissions.
We work in partnership with local authorities to agree which energy saving measures we fund.
npower Climate Cops SOS
Our npower Climate Cops SOS programme is an annual competition for teams of 11-12 year olds. By identifying a local environmental issue (their ‘Climate Cops SOS’) they could be selected as one of our 100 ‘green-agers’. If selected, they go on a ‘once in a life time’ journey to develop their communication and community engagement skills by attending a Buzz Day event and a residential Green Outward Bound course so they can solve their Climate Cops SOS and engage their local community. Once solved, they’re in with a chance of winning an amazing prize for themselves and a green fund to help their school go greener.
This competition has now closed for 2009 and the 100 finalist green-agers are now embarking on their once in a life time journey to solve their Climate Cops SOS.
Eco-networking – let your students have their say!
We have partnered with Footprint Friends a superb moderated social networking site dedicated to environmental and climate change communication for young people aged between 10 and 18.
Your students can register and have their say! Defra’s Climate Change Champions have used this site to network with other young people about these important global issues.
Since its launch in November 2007 our Climate Cops programme is already triple award winning!
"I welcome the efforts businesses are making together with our sustainable schools programme, to encourage young people to think about their contribution to climate change. I hope young people get involved with the Climate Cops programme to reduce their energy use both at school and home."
Sarah McCarthy-Fry, Minister for Young People
